Silent Night and Cross-Border Tour
Cross two bridges, explore two countries and discover a community whose shared history reaches far beyond today’s border. This guided walk through Oberndorf and Laufen brings together riverside views, historic streets and the human story behind Silent Night.
What to expect
We cross the beautiful historic Länderbrücke from Austria into Bavaria, pausing to enjoy the views along the Salzach. Its decorative ironwork frames more than a picturesque crossing: discover why this bridge became so important to the communities on either bank, and how floods and changing borders reshaped their connection.
On the Bavarian side, we explore Laufen’s old town, where handsome façades and quiet lanes recall the prosperity of the salt trade. Hear how the river brought wealth and work, how the boatmen’s lives were tied to its waters, and what happened when a community that had belonged together for centuries found itself divided between two countries in 1816.
Our return crossing takes us over the Europasteg, a modern pedestrian bridge with a much older story beneath it. Discover the significance of this historic crossing point and how the bridge restored a connection lost to the river’s floods. From here, enjoy another perspective on the towns and the landscape they share.
We finish at the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf, where the story becomes personal. Meet Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber through their lives, friendship and the circumstances surrounding the first performance of Silent Night in 1818. The chapel commemorates the former St Nicholas Church, where the song first rang out.
A walk through beautiful surroundings that connects the history of a divided town with a song that travelled around the world.
